Whenever I feel myself slipping into what I call crisis mode—basically life getting a little out of balance 😵💫—something interesting happens. My brain starts asking for fruits and vegetables. Not chocolate, potato chips, ice cream (a little grapenut ice cream wouldn’t hurt 🍨) or something like twinkies, just fruits and/or vegetables.

A little voice in my head starts saying things like, “You should get a salad or “Some fruit”. Sometimes it even suggests spinach, which seems to be responsible for helping a stressed-out brain. 🧠 🍃
I’ve never understood it, but for as long as I can remember, that’s been my signal that something is off. While some may reach for comfort food like chips and chocolate, and that’s ok–it’s not a bad thing, I apparently seek comfort from carrots and broccoli. The funny thing about that is, it works for me.
The same can be true in business. When things feel chaotic, the first instinct shouldn’t be to add another tool, system, service, or project. It’s usually a sign to simplify, refocus, and pay attention to the fundamentals.
A few things to keep in mind to help minimize out of balance moments:
- It’s summer–go for a walk, do some stretches, whatever tickles your fancy, just move.
- Kick back with a cool glass of something refreshing to drink (I know some of you don’t like water 😉).
- If you can, take a nap. I know this seems alien to some solopreneurs but do it! You’ll be glad you did and be amazed at what you can accomplish after a 20 minute power nap.
- Have a bowl/mixture of your favorite fruits or the one fruit you like most (this one’s for me).
- If you don’t want to leave your desk, stop working, put your feet up, and breath. A step further–you can even close your eyes to give it a rest from staring at the screen.
Summer feels like a reset button for me. Fresh fruit, garden vegetables, and farmers markets are everywhere. It’s a simple reminder that when things start feeling overwhelming, sometimes the answer isn’t to do more—it’s to get back to the basics–take a step back and steady your mind and body.
Apparently, my approach to both life and business is similar: When things get out of balance, step back to the basics. Preferably something healthy.😁

Something About Nothing
My New Thing: Supplements
Decades ago, when a doctor suggested removing one of my organs, my first thought was, really? 😳 What I actually asked was, “What are my options?” His response? “Remove it… or wait until you’re old and nature will take care of the problem.” Wait… what?? 😧

Let’s just say surgery didn’t move to the top of my to-do list or any of my lists for that matter.
For most of my life, I was never big on supplements. Growing up in Jamaica, “supplements” were pretty simple, every now and then: a tablespoon of sulphur bitters, a fish oil capsule and a half an orange to wash it all down.
Fast forward to a visit with my daughter. She handed me a few supplements and said, “Here… take these.” She disappeared for a moment, came back with a tiny bottle of ginseng—with a tiny straw attached—and said, “Drink this. All of it.” So… I did.
Not long after, I noticed a little ping—I felt different. Better. These days, a supplements combo has become part of my routine, and honestly, I feel great. You don’t try you don’t know. Thank you, Renae! 😁
How about you? Are supplements part of your daily routine, or are you more of a “give me half an orange and call it good” kind of person?
Hit reply—I’d love to hear your story.
