When I decided to join the chamber, it was just another way to get out there and tell everyone about what I do. However, while having coffee with Hanna, the chamber’s Membership Development Specialist, she asked me “Are you going to do a ribbon-cutting?”.
I thought for a second and said “no” she asked me why and I said “Isn’t ribbon-cutting for people who are breaking ground, large corporations or companies that are going to open and employ hundreds of people, politicians who are trying to gain favor with the masses?”
She said it is to let people know who you are and what you do, and that you are there to help and serve them. I said I would think about it and let her know. I told a few people about it and I was encouraged to do it. Ultimately, it was a way for me to put myself out there and let people get to know me.
A couple of weeks before the event I was a little nervous and wasn’t sure what I wanted to say, or how things were going to turn out. Just thinking about it gave me hives. But eventually, with some encouragement and support, I was able to, by God’s grace, calm myself.
With that said, here are some things I learned:
- I can have an idea of what I want to say without memorizing what I want to say. Initially, that’s what I was doing but for some reason, I felt anxious about it. I used what I learned. Just speak as if I were having a conversation with someone.
- It was not as earth-moving as I thought it would be. I know, right!?! I was very surprised by that revelation. But it was exciting!
- The masses really are for politicians.😁 I was strangely relieved that there were not as many people as I had anticipated.
- And last, but not least, the people that showed up were all I really needed. It’s just a reminder that not everyone invited will be able to show up.
I will always remember that feeling. I will always remember the experience, and I am so grateful that I have people in my life who encourage me to be brave.I’m gonna be OK, I will milk this experience for all it’s got, 🫢 as I relaxed and enjoyed the moment.

October Special: Shine Your Light Book Release
I will be doing something a little different this month, so to support a cause I will share the launch of a book meant to encourage and support women all over the world.
Belinda Sandor, owner of The VA Connection, co-authored a book titled “Shine Your Light” which was released in October. This book shares the story of thirteen amazing women who, with strength and determination, became very successful female entrepreneurs.
The most amazing thing about this release is that all the proceeds from the sale go to Kiva (kiva.com) – an organization that provides micro-loans to underserved communities around the world. 👏🏽
